Teak

Official name: Teak
Botanical name: Tectona grandis L.f.
Family: Verbenaceae
Grows in: Indonesia (mainly cultivated on Java).
Durability class: 1

The heartwood of Teak is light brown to golden brown and becomes platinum grey after exposure to light. Sometimes the wood is veined dark brown to black. After exposure to light, the large colour differences mostly disappear, leaving the products with a more consistent colouration.
The surface of Teak feels ‘soft’ because the wood is slightly moist. This is caused by the oil-like substances found in the wood. Thanks to its great durability, small shrinkage and warping, charming appearance, favourable strength properties at a low weight and its resistance against many chemicals, Teak can be used for nearly all purposes.
