Merbau (Intsia bijuga)

Merbau is a tried and tested construction timber that has been used for both outdoor and indoor applications for many years.
Merbau grows in South East Asia, New Guinea, the islands of the south west Pacific and is cultivated on Madagascar.

The colour of fresh Merbau heartwood is yellow to orange brown, which darkens fairly quickly under the influence of UV light, changing from brown to dark red/brown. Depending on the area of origin there are sometimes yellow/white dots visible in the wood, the result of salts that the tree stores in its cells.
The wood also occasionally has blackish areas. The major colour contrasts in the light and dark areas disappear over time.

Smaragd recommends that your clients finish the floor with wax or oil, although it is also possible to use varnish.

Smaragd Merbau floor sections are available in the following dimensions.
